Join us for a discussion of a The Penguin Lessons, by Tom Mitchell.
A recounting of Tom Mitchell’s experiences in 1975, when he was on a weekend vacation in Uruguay and came across a beach covered with dead penguins affected by an oil spill. Tom found online penguin that was moving, barely alive. After cleaning this penguin he made several attempts to return it to the ocean; the penguin instead clung to Tom. Since Tom needed to return to Argentina where he taught he smuggled the penguin through customs and onto the campus. It became a beloved figure among all those it encountered. The book also gives a glimpse of several South American countries and the political and economic turmoil in Argentina in the seventies.
